Thinking about getting a Ferret.but I live overseas?

joy_gone_wild asked the question:

I am in the military, and currently living in Japan. I found a baby farret in a pet shop, and he was ADORABLE! I grew up on a farm, and have had every pet imaginable, and trained every thing from chickens to horses (I have a cat that fetches). My question is if I get a Ferret in Japan, can I take it back to the United States when my tour is over in Japan? I plan on asking the on-post vet on Monday, but I thought I might get an answer more quickly on here.
more details: I am married, so my husband will be home to take care of the farret if I have to leave for any reason. I would never get an animal that would become another person’s burden.
An update for Kasey: I have obviously not bought this ferret on a whim, thus the “I’m thinking about” part of my question. I mentioned the farm thing to let people answering my question know my back ground. As far as my husband goes, if he hadn’t liked the idea of having a Ferret, I wouldn’t have even thought about geting one. I am a responsable pet owner. I am researching what I would have to do to take care of this animal before I am buying it….if only more people would do that, my farm wouldn’t have ended up with so many abandon animals that people didn’t know how to, or couldn’t take care of. I wasn’t asking for any ones opinion about weather or not I should get a ferret, just if any one knew if I could bring it back to the states in about 1.5 years. Thank you.

If you travel around a lot or are in the military getting a ferret isn’t a very good idea. If you do want to get a ferret, i would reccomend getting one from a reputable breeder rather than a pet store.

Also, I believe they need to be quarantined and recieve immunizations before being allowed to travel overseas.

Don’t get a ferret in Japan while you are in the military.
You growing up on a farm has absolutely nothing to do with a ferret.

You will be spending a lot of money, and investing a lot of time you won’t have. Has your husband agreed to raise an animal you bought on a whim?

And don’t even THINK about bringing home from the pet store if you haven’t got an EXOTICS vet lined up- both on the base, AND in your hometown.

Ferrets need a large cage, usually running from 100-300 dollars BEFORE modifications. How will you be transporting it home? The cage will only be a hassle, and most airlines don’t allow pets on board, even in the cargo hold.
If you manage to get it home, are you knowledgeable on quarantine and the laws of ferret ownership in your state? You may not be allowed by state law to have it at all.

It’s also advisable to keep ferrets in pairs, they are social and get bored easily. Do you have the space and money to keep two?

I could go on and on, but to me it doesn’t seem like the ideal situation.

yeah you should definitely be able to, but it think you need an animal passport, no lie they have a passport available for cats, dogs, ferrets, and i think its rabbits, ive seen the commercials plus it is good to have ferrets in pairs or more which is why i have 3 but then again i just love them sooo much

and OMFG i hate that bitch above me, KASEY UR A FUCKING IDIOT, STOP WITH THE NEGATIVE TALK ABOUT FERRETS, IF UR TALKING ABOUT THEM THIS WAY YOU OBVIOUSLY HAVENT OWNED ANY, AS I HAVE OWNED WELL OVER 25 FOR THE PAST 13 YEARS AND IM ONLY 15 SO STFU
