It was based on Ed Gein… not a real chainsaw-welding-psycho…
Look ‘em up on wikipedia if you really wanna know who he is… it’s interesting…

Yes, actually he is still alive…he still lives in that very same farmhouse and he gives tours, except actually I just called up there and he didn’t answer and that is kinda strange cause OH MY GOD HE’s RIGHT BEHIND YOU WITH A BIG OL’ KNIFE!!!
There is no real “Texas Chainsaw” murderer. The movie was _loosely based_ on Ed Gein, who was from Wisconsin. He died in a psychiatic hospital.
“This film, like the films Psycho (1960), Deranged, and The Silence of the Lambs (1991), was loosely inspired by Wisconsin serial killer Ed Gein. Gein did wear human skin, but he acted alone and did not use a chainsaw. The interior of the house, particularly the macabre living room filled with bones, was also based on the crime scene notes describing the inside of Gein’s home. The film’s opening claims the events are factual, a use of the false document technique. (Filming was from 1973-07-15 and shown from 1973-08-14, while the opening narrative claims that the events took place on 1973-08-18.) Libraries in Burkburnett, Texas and nearby Wichita Falls regularly receive requests for copies of newspaper articles related to the events.”
“The Texas Chain Saw Massacre : Connection to actual events” :
“Gein was found mentally incompetent and thus unfit to stand trial at the time of his arrest, and was sent to the Central State Hospital (now the Dodge Correctional Institution) in Waupun, Wisconsin. Later, Central State Hospital was converted into a prison and Gein was transferred to Mendota State Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin. In 1968, Gein’s doctors determined he was sane enough to stand trial; he was found not guilty by reason of insanity and spent the rest of his life in the hospital.”
“On 1984-07-26, Ed Gein died of respiratory and heart failure in Goodland Hall at the Mendota Mental Health Institute.”
“Film killers Leatherface (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), Buffalo Bill (The Silence of the Lambs), and Norman Bates (Psycho) were all, in part, based on aspects of Gein’s crimes.”
